At the Sydney Opera House’s celebration to mark the important John Cage anniversary (100 years since his birth and 20 years since his death), Lyle Chan will give a public lecture on Cage’s most famous and yet least understood work – 4’33”.

For four minutes and thirty three seconds, the performers make no sound on their instruments. This is often interpreted as a silent work, though Lyle Chan will explain how this isn’t so in Cage’s subtler intentions. He will also explain its deep connections with Zen philosophy, its historical precedents, and reveal many interesting facts – that the work is in 3 movements, for instance, and that it took Cage four years to ‘write’.
